The University has launched a campaign which will recognise the University’s most outstanding students and members of staff. The Tell Us Your Story awards, which are being run for a second year, aim to highlight some of the amazing work done by people at the University, both staff and students. This year’s awards are introducing two new categories to ensure that everyone across the University has a chance to take part. Students from Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University, have been recording extracts of works by Benjamin Britten, one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, which have never been played or heard before. A famously precocious composer, Britten archived the scores of his early, often very ambitious work, which he did not believe suitable for public performance. Only now is it possible to take a longer view and present these extracts, which will be of enormous interest both to the general public and specialists. Two Professors from Birmingham City Business School have received professional recognition for their research relating to health and safety management systems, for UK construction businesses. Their academic paper reporting the research, authored by Professor David Edwards and Professor Gary Holt from the University’s Centre for Business, Innovation and Enterprise (CBIE) – along with co-authors Dr Riaz from the National University of Science and Technology in Pakistan and Professor Thorpe from Loughborough University – has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards. Recession-busting young entrepreneurs from Birmingham City University are to open their own shop in the city’s premier shopping and lifestyle centre. Jiehong (Joshua) Jiang, a leading researcher and curator in Chinese art, has been conferred with the title, Professor of Chinese Art by Birmingham City University. Professor Jiang moved from Shanghai to England in 1998 to continue his postgraduate study for an MA in Fine Art at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), part of University of Central England (former name of Birmingham City University). After completing his PhD in 2002, he continued his research and curatorial practice on contemporary Chinese art and visual culture alongside his teaching contributions to postgraduate courses.
